Russians shock Agatha and Duda

04.07.2019 - Hamburg, Germany

It continues to be a tough day for Brazil at the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships as just a few hours after Evandro Goncalves and Bruno Schmidt were knocked out of the men’s tournament, Agatha Bednarczuk and Duda Lisboa had the same fate and had to settle for a ninth-place finish at the Rothenbaum.

The Brazilians had an entertaining three-set battle with Nadezda Makroguzova and Svetlana Kholomina but they ended on the wrong side of it after the Russians posted a shocking 22-20, 18-21, 22-20 win to advance to the quarterfinals in Hamburg.

“It was a big and very important win for us, we’re happy to the moon and back,” a pumped Makroguzova said afterwards. “It took us a lot of control to come out on top in the third set, both in controlling our actions and our emotions. They had a match point when Duda had a great serve, but we remained calm and just focused on the next play.”

The Round of 16 setback puts an end to a series of podium placements of Agatha in Hamburg as she won gold at last year’s World Tour Finals and silvers in the same tournament in 2017 and at the 2016 Hamburg Major.

“We lost the game in the first set, when we made too many mistakes and couldn’t find out rhythm,” she reflected. “In the third set both teams were in the game and we were back and forth with them and it could have gone either way. But they played very well and even if we tried to do all best, we couldn’t.”

The Russians will now play Australians Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho, who secured their spot among the five best teams in the World Championships with a hard-fought 21-16, 21-23, 15-9 victory over Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré.
