Entertaining showdown guaranteed

04.07.2019 - Hamburg

Friday will see two of beach volleyball’s most entertaining teams go head-to-head for a place in the quarter-finals after Italy’s Adrian Carambula and Enrico Rossi and Robin Seidl and Phillip Waller of Austria recorded terrific victories on Thursday morning.

For Italians Carambula and Rossi, their run to the Last 16 is even more special given they were a late entry to the tournament following the withdrawal of the team from Sierra Leone.

They came through a pool containing some of the world’s best teams and their first elimination game saw them crush Switzerland’s Adrian Heidrich and Mirco Gerson in straight sets.

“We’re having fun – you have to when you coming into an event like we did – but we have always remained focus because we want to do well,” said Carambula who wowed the big crowd on side court 3 with a series of sky serves.

“We are a bit lucky to be here but no way did we think coming into the tournament that we will just enjoy it. No, no, no. We are here to go as far as we can. We have a game now to try and win and that will put us in the quarter-finals. We will focus on that now.”

Meanwhile, Austrians Seidl/Waller staged a fantastic comeback to see of Canadians Ben Saxton and Grant O’Gorman, coming back to win in three sets on side court 2.

After Evandro and Bruno’s early exit, all eyes were on the Canadians, who topped the Group of the Death in the pool play – beating Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser, another shock followed.

Now the pair face Carambula and Rossi for a place in the last eight. And the duo can’t wait.

“It will be a fun game, that’s for sure,” said Seidl. “We are playing for a place in the quarter-finals, something we always dreamed of. We’re not finished yet. We want to go as far as we can.”

Waller added: “This is probably one of the best wins of my career. It’s unbelievable. We never gave up. In the first set it was a bit tough siding out against them but we found our game and never looked back after the second set.”
