Darlings of the German crowd, Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler will face 2013 champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen on the Red Bull Beach Arena on Thursday in the pick of the men’s first elimination matches.
Among the other big games to look out for include Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb of the United States against Spaniards Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira.
Reigning champion Evandro Goncalves and reigning Olympic champion Bruno Oscar Schmidt face Americans Billy Allen and Stafford Slick, while Andre Loyola and George Wanderely will need to get past Latvians Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins.
The top four seeds teams still in the competition, including world number ones Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway, will face one of the winners from the Lucky Loser play-offs.
Among the four Lucky Loser play-off matches, which take place on Wednesday evening, 2007 champion Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena aim to get out of their funk when they place Mexicans Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen.
