Agatha and Duda keep going

01.07.2019 - Hamburg, Germany

Agatha Bednarczuk and Duda Lisboa became the second Brazilian team to secure a spot in the Round of 32 of the women’s tournament of the 2019 Beach Volleyball World Championships as the winners of last year’s World Tour Finals ended on top of Pool F in Hamburg.

The Brazilians earned their third victory at the Red Bull Beach Arena at the Rothenbaum Stadium by prevailing over Chinese Fan Wang and Xinyi Xia 21-16, 21-11 and they finished pool play undefeated, as did Ana Patrica and Rebecca earlier in the day.

“It was windy today and serving well really made a difference for us,” Agatha said. “What I liked the most about this game, though, was that we started it with one strategy but decided to change it when we figured out we could do better playing  another way. That kind of maturity is really important for us and it shows we’re communicating well on the court.”

The Brazilians completely dominated their pool not dropping any sets along the way and they hope they can keep the pace when the elimination round starts on Wednesday.

“Finishing first was our goal and I’m very happy about the way we did it,” Duda added. “We had to deal with opponents who had different styles and we played in different conditions too, but always managed to adapt. It was good to start it so well, but we need to remain focused for the elimination round.”

The final match of the pool saw Japan's Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami defeat Cuba's Leila Martinez and Maylen Tamayo 21-17, 21-16. The final standings of the group have the Chinese in second and also guaranteed in the Round of 32 and the Japanese in third.

They could either advance directly to the Round of 32 too or need to play a lucky loser match before they make it to the elimination round depending on the outcomes of the other pools. The Cubans are out of contention.
