Swiss stars sink Canadians… again!

30.06.2019 - Hamburg

Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Heidrich love playing against Brandie Wilkerson and Heather Bansley and their latest victory here at the World Championships was even sweeter.

The Swiss stars won a tense three-set game against the Canadians third seeds on court 2 to extend their excellent record against their opponents to 4-1 and helped ensure they qualified for the knockout stages.

“We’re not sure why we have such a good record but we enjoy playing against them, that’s for sure,” said blocker Heidrich. “It’s a test we really love and it helps that we are able to come up against a team of that quality and win.”

According to the stats, Heidrich lost the block count to Brandie 8-6, but it was the four blocks to zero in Joana’s favor in the third and final set that ultimately was the difference in the Swiss’ 21-19, 16-21, 15-8 victory.

“Joana played amazing today in the block today against Brandie who we all know of course is a brilliant player,” said Anouk. “We knew that we had a good record against them and maybe that played on their minds a little. However we kept going and in the final set we played really well. It means we’re through and now we have a break and aim to top the pool when we face Uruguay.”

Joana and Anouk were not the only teams to make it two wins out of two on Sunday. Americans Alix Klineman and April Ross cruised to a win over Xinxin Wang and Chen Xue on the Red Bull Beach Arena, while Canadians Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan fought back from a losing position against Russia’s Ekaterina Birlova and Evgeniya Ukolova.

Meanwhile on the men’s side, reigning champion André Loyola and teammate George Wanderely made it two wins in under 24 hours with a comfortable victory over Mozambique’s Delcio Soares and Aldevino Nguvo.

Number two seeds Michal Bryl and Grzegorz Fijalek avoided an upset on the center court with a win in three sets against Germans Philipp Bergmann and Yannick Harms, while Olympic silver medalists of 2016, Italians Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo maintained their unbeaten start with a win over Austrians Philipp Waller and Robin Seidl.
