Double Dutch delight

30.06.2019 - Hamburg, Germany

The morning session of the third day of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Hamburg 2019 presented by comdirect and ALDI Nord promoted a pair of duels between women’s teams from Australia and the Netherlands at the Red Bull Beach Arena and Europeans came up on top on both.

The first Dutch victory came via the hands of Joy Stubbe and Marleen van Iersel as the Europeans beat the seventh-seeded Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho 21-19, 24-22.

The result has put the team in great position on Pool G as they now have two wins and all the tools to secure the top spot against Mauritius’ Maita Cousin and Nathalie Letendrie on Monday.

“We had a great gameplan coming into the match and really stuck to it and also served really well at the end of the both sets, which put them under some pressure” van Iersel explained. “We knew it was going to be a tough pool as there were two very strong teams on it, but we worked hard preparing for it and did a good job on our first matches. Now we need to keep the same focus for the last one because we want to be first and hopefully get a more favorable draw in elimination.”

Shortly after it, it was time for the reigning European champions Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink to secure their second win in the tournament as they downed Nicole Laird and Becchara Palmer 21-16, 21-12.

On Tuesday, they will face Switzerland’s Nina Betschart and Tanja Hüberli for the top spot of the pool.

“We put a lot of pressure on them with our serves and that forced them to make some mistakes,” Meppelink commented. “I liked the way we played today, but we can still do better. Some of our passes were too high and it make a little harder for us to set the way we wanted and that’s certainly something we can improve. The Swiss are a great team and it’s going to be a battle against them.”

Also winning their morning matches in Hamburg were Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk/Duda Lisboa and China’s Fan Wang/Xinyi Xia. They will play for the top spot of Pool F on Monday.
