Andre debuts with three-set thriller win

29.06.2019 - Hamburg, Germany

Reigning world champion André Loyola followed former partner’s Evandro Goncalves’ lead and also featured in a thrilling three-setter on his debut at the FIVB World Championships Hamburg 2019 presented by comdirect and ALDI Nord as him and George Wanderley secured their first win in the tournament.

The Brazilians faced Austrians Robin Seidl and Philipp Waller on their pool H opening match and they were nearly taken down by the Europeans, but managed to get the final points and secure a 21-19, 13-21, 16-14 win on the Red Bull Beach Arena after thrilling 62 minutes of beach volleyball.

“We expected it to be as tough as it was,” André said afterwards. “We’ve been training and preparing for the tournament and we both were very anxious to get on the court and play. The Austrians are a good team and it was amazing to play them on the center court in front of all those fans. I think we had our ups and downs, but we believed until the end and I think we deserved to win because of our fighting spirits.”

The Brazilians will return to the court on Sunday, when they will play Mozambique’s Delcio Soares and Aldevino Nguvo. The Africans started their campaigns in Hamburg with a 12-21, 4-21 defeat to Italian Olympic medalists.

Borger and Sude excite the fans

The last team to secure a victory on its debut was the one of Karla Borger and Julia Sude. The Germans were pushed by the fans in the last match of the day to pull a 21-15, 21-18 win over China’s Chen Xue and Xinxin Wang.

The Europeans’ second opponents at the Rothenbaum Stadium will be Nicaraguans Lollete Rodriguez and Valeria Mendoza, on Sunday. The Chinese will face Americans Alix Klineman and April Ross also on Sunday.
