World Champs debut in the books for the Vikings

28.06.2019 - Hamburg, Germany

World number ones Anders Mol and Christian Sørum made a successful start in their first-ever Beach Volleyball World Championships match as the Norwegians posted a comfortable 21-10, 21-14 victory over Cubans Sergio Gonzalez and Luis Reyes to start their campaigns at the Red Bull Beach Arena in Hamburg.

Mol and Sørum, who returned to the Red Bull Beach Arena for the first time after they won the 2018 World Tour Finals, secured an early lead on Pool A and will return to the court on Sunday, when they face the home team of Jonathan Erdmann and Sven Winter.

“We certainly tried to feel it as if it was just another tournament, but everything is so much bigger here, so it was hard not to think about how huge this is,” Mol said.

“Every second here means so much but we’re just trying to keep things as normal as possible. We really want to win a medal and we know that if we get to play at the same level we’ve been playing for the last couple of months we have a good chance.”

The reputation of their first opponents, however, didn’t allow the Vikings to be way too much relaxed as the Cubans are known in the World Tour for being a dangerous team, which is able to bet the best duos in the world when they are on their day.

“We were really prepared,” Sørum added. “We had a good start and Anders got a few blocks to start the match which were very important. They like to hit the ball hard and after these first plays they had to change their styles a little bit and that helped us.”

In the other match of the pool, Brazilians Pedro Solberg, who’s playing on his seventh World Championships, and Vitor Felipe also started in good fashion as they defeated the provisory team of Erdmann and Winter in straight sets (21-18, 21-16).

“It was a great start for us,” Pedro remarked. “It was a nervous match and we were brave when we needed to and we were patient when we were down. They had never played together before, so we had to prepare for the match based on their individual skills, but there were also some little situations that we managed to explore, such as serving between them as it’s always hard to determine who should receive that ball in a new team.”

The Brazilians will now play the Cubans on Sunday.
