Injured Sluková out of World Championships

27.06.2019 - Hamburg

Just 24 hours before the start of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships presented by comdirect and ALDI Nord there were two dramatic changes to teams appearing at the Red Bull Beach Arena.

Second seeds from the Czech Republic, Markéta Sluková and Barbora Hermannová, have had to make the tough decision of withdrawing from their second championships together. Defender Sluková sustained a broken toe last week and despite the best efforts to train through the pain they decided against risking the injury further.

A disappointed Sluková said: “I am extremely sad and heartbroken. I can’t even describe the disappointment right now. For 10 years I have done everything to travel to a World Championships as a number 1 and having a shot to win a medal - this year it looked like that but then this happened - my coach is right, there is too much at stake.”

That misfortune means Austria’s number one women’s team, Lena Plesiutschnig and Katharina Schützenhöfer, will replace the Czech team. The Austrians, the top-ranked team on the reserve list, will take their place in Pool B and kick-off their first match on the Red Bull Beach Arena on Friday against Germans Leonie Körtzinger and Sarah Schneider.

In the second change, Italians Adrian Carambula and Enrico Rossi have replaced Sierra Leone’s John Kamara and Ishmail Bangura who could not make it to Hamburg due to force majeure.

Carambula and Rossi, who have enjoyed a fine start to their partnership this season – winning one silver in Sydney – will line-up in Pool D that now looks wide open. The duo begin their first World Championships together against Qataris Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse on Friday.

A thrilled Carambula said: “We’re sorry that those guys couldn’t make it but when we got the call we booked the first flight to Hamburg.

“We’re absolutely stoked to be competing, I’ve always felt we deserved to be here.

“It’s a tough pool, but one that anyone can win. We’ll enjoy this moment and once the adrenaline has passed we’ll focus on our game on Friday.”
