Pools drawn for World Championships

04.06.2019 - Hamburg

The beach volleyball elite now know which teams they will face at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships Hamburg 2019 presented by comdirect and ALDI Nord following the Drawing of Lots.

World number ones and top seeds, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway, face competition from teams from Brazil, hosts Germany and Cuba as the Beachvolley Vikings embark on their first ever World Championships, which kicks off in the Rothenbaum Stadium on June 28.

The number one women’s team in the FIVB ranking, Canadians Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson, also face a team from Germany, as well as pairings from Switzerland and Uruguay as they target an improvement on their fifth place finish in Vienna in 2017.

Reigning world champion Laura Ludwig, who now partners with Maggie Kozuch, will begin the defence of her title with pool play matches against tandems from Brazil, the United States and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the men’s champions from Vienna two years ago, André Loyola Stein and Evandro Gonçalves Oliveira Junior, are both aiming to become the first men to ever retain a world title, but will do so this year with different partners.

André and teammate George Souto Maior Wanderley will take on teams from Italy, Austria and Mozambique, while Evandro and partner Bruno Oscar Schmidt – the 2015 champion – will tackle pairs representing Spain, Australia and Venezuela.

Leading German men’s team, Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler, have been drawn against teams from the USA, Iran and Rwanda on their first appearance at a World Championships. Top women’s seeds, Sandra Ittlinger and Chantal Laboureur – a new constellation for 2019 – must face opposition from Italy, Canada and Paraguay.

A host for former World Champions will contest the 12th edition of the World Championships, including American Kerri Walsh Jennings, who with partner Brooke Sweat, will be going for a fourth title. Standing in their way in the pool play are tandems from Australia, the Netherlands and Mauritius.

The top two teams from each pool automatically progress to the elimination rounds, with the four best third-placed teams joining them. The eight remaining third-placed teams will play-off in a ‘lucky loser’ round to determine the final four spots in the Round of 32.
